Here are some general hints so that you can take care while trekking:

  • Keep photocopies of your passport, visa, flight ticket in the place you will return to.
  • Take note of nearby medical facilities.
  • Consider health and safety risks.
  • Seek out local advice on safe/unsafe areas.
  • Be a bit sceptical of official tourist information.
  • Keep an eye on the local newspapers, radio, television, websites to monitor weather conditions.
  • Be familiar with symptoms of altitude sickness and observe sensible acclimatisation.
  • Don’t trek alone, even on a day hike.
  • Use insect repellent and don’t stir up the nests of wasps, hornets, birds, etc.
  • Take care in areas of poisonous snakes, spiders and insects.
  • Avoid trekking through thick growth or places where visibility is poor.
  • If coming across a wild animal, avoid sudden movements and move slowly away.
  • Show respect to Mother Nature and carry any garbage with you, e.g. wrappings of snacks and nibbles.
  • Leave the environment as you found it.
